You are what you eat. No, really! The food you take into your mouth is broken down by your teeth, saliva and stomach acids. The nutrients are sent to all parts of your body and the rest is discarded. Food high in nutrition is good fuel for your body. Food that doesn't have much nutrition (often called "junk food") doesn't feed the body what it needs and puts a drain on the whole system. Over time this can lead to medical issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer...

How to know if you are eating nutritious food:

1) If it grew out of the ground it's most likely nutritious.

2) If you are eating a variety of colors (also from the ground), it's probably nutritious.

3) If you are eating a lot of fresh food, you are probably getting a lot of nutrition. (Aim for half of your food at a meal being fresh food).

Just like an engine needs good fuel (and the right kind of fuel) to run properly, we need to eat the right kind of fuel so we can build good blood, bones and bodies, and we will have the energy we need to live the best and healthiest life possible. This keeps our immune system in good order, helps our body heal from sicknesses or injuries, helps us grow and do all the things we like to do and need to do (like breathe, blink, walk...).

Studies show that people who eat plant-based diets including lots of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables as close to their natural state as possible (no meat or animal products) have lower rates of cancer and heart disease.
